About Strathpeffer
In Victorian times the village of Strathpeffer was one of the most fashionable spas in Europe and famous for its sulphur springs and magnificent scenery.
Many famous visitors made the journey by steam train or horse drawn carriages to take the restorative spa waters and recuperate in the pure Highland air. These included European royalty as well as famous writers such as Robert Louis Stevenson, and George Bernard Shaw.
The village is currently experiencing an artistic and commercial renaissance with the recent restoration of the magnificent Spa Pavilion off the main square, which hosts concerts, fairs and weddings and its surrounding Pleasure Gardens and Pump Room. The railway station, which carried visitors from London to the village until 1951, has been restored and now houses the charming and interesting Highland Museum of Childhood, a warm and welcoming café, serving delicious soups and home baking, and attractive shops.
